A Chance At Love
Life was not really panning out for her like she had envisioned for herself. She was in her last semester at University of Texas when one stupid night filled with booze and fun ended with her getting pregnant. At twenty-three years old, she was not ready to be mom.
For the past nine months, she had toyed with the thoughts of keeping her baby. She still did not know how she would give her baby, who was a part of her, to a complete stranger to raise. She cursed herself as the rain began to come down in buckets. She had procrastinated on seeking Derrick out, and now she was stuck driving in the rain so hard that she could barely see out the window
"It's okay, little one, we're almost there," She whispered to her stomach. Bailey had no idea what she was having. She was not trying to form any connection to the baby. She feared that if she did, she would not be able to let him or her go. Maybe that is why she procrastinated that long-- could it be that she did not want him to sign the papers so she did not have to give up her child? A part of her wanted Derrick to man up and tell her that he would help financially, but she knew he did not want any part of this child’s life or hers.
Bailey screamed as she swerved to miss the woman standing in the road.

Lucas
Davenport pulled the weeds that grew on his wife Georgia's tombstone. Lucas understood the phrase “gone too soon.” His
Georgia
was young and had a lot of living to do. They had just celebrated their second
wedding anniversary planning the arrival of their daughter only to be told that
Georgia
had lung cancer, even though she had never smoked a day in her life.
"I'm not scared.” Her
brown eyes bore into his.
"I’m scared, Georgia . I don't think I can live
without you."
“Shh," She hugged him,
“Let’s treasure the time that I have here in this earth."
Lucas kissed her eyes and
prayed to God to spare his wife and child. He wanted to live forever with Georgia
and to raise their kids together.
Opening
his eyes, Lucas read the gravestone: "In
Loving Memory of Georgia Lily Ann Davenport and daughter Holly Davenport."
The rain poured down on Lucas as he placed white roses and lilies on the
tombstone.
Today
would have been his daughter’s first birthday. He never had a chance to hold
his baby girl in his arms or teach her how to walk.
He
kissed the tombstone before walking the long path back to his truck. It had
been so damn hard for him.
Lucas
drove the long treacherous road back to the base. Lucas slammed on breaks when he saw what
appeared to be the taillights of a car almost submerged in a retention pond. He
pulled into the shoulder of the road, turned on his emergency lights, and ran
across the street to the car.
"Help!" A female voice cried out.
"I'm
coming! Don't move!" He shouted as he made his way down the slippery,
muddy ditch that was filling up with water quickly. The nose of the car was
already in four feet of water.
"Please--
I don't want to die!"
"You
won't, I promise. I need you to calm down for me." Lucas tried the handle
on the car door, but it was almost covered with water. He knew it was only a
matter of time before the water flooded the car.
"I'm
going to have to smash the window. I’m going to run to my truck."
"Don't
leave me!" she cried out and touched the window.
"I
be right back" Lucas saw the look in her brown eyes, he didn't want to
leave her but he had to get her out the sinking car. Wasting no time, he climbed
up the muddy hill and raced towards his truck.
He grabbed the tire iron and raced back down the hill towards the car
that was submerged partially in the pond. He did not hear her screams anymore.
Lucas swam to the car and climbed onto the trunk of the car. Lucas took three
hard swings before the glass gave way. The
woman’s brown eyes looked into his.
"Grab
my hands," he said quickly. When she reached up to him, he saw the woman's
pregnant belly. Lucas braced himself on
the car and pulled her out of it.
"Thank
you." She looked into his eyes before she fainted. He checked her pulse
before carrying her up the hill.
"Mister,
I already called 911," A man said as he rushed towards them with a
blanket.
